All Aboard the Tupper Lake Explorer 

Discover the natural beauty and rich history of the Adirondacks aboard the Tupper Lake Explorer, a round-trip excursion on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Departing from the historic village of Tupper Lake, NY, this scenic train ride offers breathtaking views, fascinating landmarks, and a relaxing way to explore the northern Adirondacks.

As the train heads south, it crosses the historic Underwood Bridge, a lattice truss bridge built in the late 1800s that spans the Raquette River. Just beyond the bridge, look to the west for the remnants of a brick shingle mill, a relic of the area's industrial era.

The journey continues past Piercefield Flow, a quiet reservoir surrounded by wilderness. A few miles farther, you'll pass the site of the former Childwold Station, once an important stop on the New York Central Railroad and the Grasse River Railroad.

Enjoy scenic views of Mount Arab, where the fire tower may be visible on clear days. The ride winds through classic Adirondack landscapes—featuring pristine lakes, marshlands, beaver flows, and ancient glacial rock formations.

The destination is Sabattis, a remote wetland area known for its peaceful surroundings and local wildlife—ideal for photography and relaxation.

Tupper Lake Explorer Schedule

Train Departure Times: 

12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. most Sundays. See the event schedule for confirmed trips.

Trip Duration:

1.5 hours round trip. Starts & ends in Tupper Lake.

Trip Route: 

Tupper Lake to Sabattis (round trip). Please be advised, passengers do not get off the train at Sabattis. 

Parking and Tickets

  • Parking for train passengers is available on Washington Street. Continue past the playground, and the parking lot will be on your right. From here, it is a very short walk to the boarding platforms and the Train Station.

Accessibility:

Restrooms on the train are not wheelchair accessible; however, there are wheelchair accessible restrooms in all of our stations.
