Getting there

From the intersection of Route 30 and Route 3 in Tupper Lake follow Route 3 toward Piercefield. Drive through Piercefield into Gale and locate the Massawepie Boy Scout Camp on the left. Launch is just prior to this road off Route 3.

Paddling

Catamount is best approached and launched from Route 3 along a narrow path to a small rocky ledge area. This spot is often used by fisherman as well. Catamount is the pond with the highest elevation of the bunch, meaning it drains into the other ponds on the property. With nearly 2 miles of shoreline the pond has plenty to offer, including a perfect habitat for loons. Catamount can also be accessed from the north via Round Pond and a short portage. 

  • Type of launch: About 100 foot carry along a path, flat
  • Type of water: Catamount is well protected by the trees, but due to its shape and size it can get a bit choppy in windy conditions.

Fishing

This area is open for fishing from September 1 through June 14 each year.

Fish species present in the lake are white sucker, smallmouth bass, brook trout, rock bass, yellow perch, and black bullhead.
