This paddle is the longest of the three Triad paddles. But don’t let the distance deter you. It is an incredibly beautiful paddle that takes you through many interesting environments. The start of this paddle is known locally as “The Crusher.” This may seem like a daunting name, but we promise, here, you’ll only find peace and quiet. The Crusher name came to be only because of the launch’s proximity to a former gravel crushing operation. 

How to get there

From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 30 in Tupper Lake, follow Route 3 towards Saranac Lake. Before approaching the "Y" you will see a state boat launch for the Raquette River on the right hand side of the road. There is a large parking lot here.

We recommend leaving one car at the State Route 30 boat launch for when you finish. To get to this boat launch, head out on State Route 30 towards Long Lake. A quarter mile after crossing Moody Bridge, you will see the boat launch on your right.

Paddling

Starting out at the State Route 3 Boat Launch, you will meander down the Raquette River. Traveling in this direction is all downstream. After paddling for a bit, you’ll reach the famous Oxbow at the Wild Center. Once you exit the Raquette River into Simon Pond, the paddling might change. There may be more boat traffic between Simon Pond and the take out, but all should be in a “no-wake” zone. From Simon Pond, you will continue under the Moody Bridge and through the channel to the State Route 30 Boat Launch.

Along the Raquette River, pull off to have lunch, take a swim, or take a break at the many pull-offs and campsites. 

Fishing

Bring your fishing gear along in your kayak or canoe for this trip. The Raquette River portion of this trip offers excellent fishing, as does Simon Pond. Tupper Lake is home to many different species of fish, and some record holders are waiting for you! Find more fishing info here.
