The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice in the Adirondack Frontier
with author Amy Godine
The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (Cornell, November, 2023) chronicles the dramatic history of Black pioneers in New York’s northern wilderness. From the 1840s into the 1860s, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote.
With stories from her new book, Godine shares the history of Black pioneers who migrated to the Adirondack wilderness in the mid-19th century to build subsistence farms, claim the right to vote, and earn a name as community builders on a raw, obdurate frontier.
