1. Opening of Wild Walk
It’s near, it’s near, it’s practically here! The much anticipated Wild Walk will open on Saturday, July 4, 2015 - the same day that commemorates the 10th Anniversary of The Wild Center, the facility which provides a home to this cool new experience.
Once Wild Walk opens, visitors will get the chance to see the Adirondack’s beautiful landscape and wildlife from a whole new perspective. Wild Walk is an elevated interpretive nature trail across the treetops. It is accessible to people of all generations and abilities and features a giant spider web where you can hang out in a whole new way, an oversized bald eagle’s nest, a 4-story twig tree house, and more.
This is something not to be missed this summer! Wild Walk will mark its grand opening with a special event “The Makers: Opening of the Wild Walk,” scheduled on July 4.
2. Swimming at Little Wolf Beach
After soaring like an eagle from the Treetops of Wild Walk, it is only fitting that the next thing you check off your list is acting like a fish! After all, what summer vacation is complete without taking a dip? Check out our hidden gem of a beach on Little Wolf Pond, and test your fins in the refreshing Adirondack water.
3. Softball, Fireworks, and Treasure Hunting… Oh, My!
Independence Day weekend is always a great time to be in Tupper Lake, and once again there will be a flurry of activity to partake in. From treasure hunting in the annual Community-Wide Garage Sale, to catching some of the action at the Old Home Softball Tourney, to the spectacular fireworks display on July 3rd set to the backdrop of Raquette Pond, this is one happening place. Consider spending a long weekend in Tupper Lake to celebrate Independence Day this year.
4. Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Days
From tradition to the latest trends, Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Days is something for the whole family to enjoy. This year’s event is scheduled for July 11-12, and includes old-time-favorites like the gala parade, the greased-pole climb, chainsaw carving contests, heavy equipment & team contests. In addition, there will be some new events like Lumber-Con, monster trucks, the DLW Timberworks Show, and more! 5. Golf
If time on the greens is what you are looking for, then July is the month for you. With plenty of rain in June, the lush, rolling fairways sculpted into the base of Big Tupper Ski Area are in amazing condition as we head into July. Don't forget to pack the clubs and come enjoy a round on the Donald Ross designed Tupper Lake Golf Club.
6. Warrior Run
You are never too old to play in the mud... especially if you want to be crowned "a warrior!" The Warrior Run at Big Tupper Ski Area is quickly becoming a summer highlight for many. Grab a team of your favorite people - or choose to tough it out and go at it on your own - and plan to tackle this 5k combination of harrowing obstacles, unforgiving terrain, and spectacular views. You'll be sure to walk away with memories (and possibly some scars) that will last you a lifetime! The 2015 Warrior Run will take place on July 18, 2015, and discounted online registration is still open!
7. The Trails…
By foot or by bike, spending time on the trails is probably the #1 iconic activity for an authentic Adirondack vacation! Make sure to schedule some time to follow the trails to some of the best views you could hope to see on any summer vacation. Choose from family-friendly hikes to mountain peaks & waterfalls, accessible trails at John Dillon Park and The Wild Center, or nearby high peaks like the Seward Mountain Range. The options lead you on over 2,000 miles of hiking opportunities in the park.
8. ...and the Water!
Along with the trails, there's the water. And the options for fun and adventure are abundant. From fishing and boating to canoeing and kayaking, and from lakes and ponds to rivers and streams... the hardest part here is making the choice of where to start. But rest assured, if you're on the water, odds are you're in the right place!
9. Live Music & Local Craft Beer
Cold beer and hot summer days go together like peas and carrots. No wait, they pair up even better! While you are resting from all of the activity, make sure to sample some of the new brews in town from our local breweries: Raquette River Brewing and Big Tupper Brewing. Many of the stores & restaurants in town also carry a great assortment of other regional craft beers that are well worth a try.
If catching some live music is on your summer bucket list, you will be happy to hear that Tupper Lake has a growing music scene. 10. Stargazing
Look up! The Adirondack Park has some of the darkest skies in the northeast and as a result it also offers some of the best stargazing one would ever dream of! In fact, visitors often comment that they had no idea how many stars there really are in the sky. So after a day of exploring, don't let your adventures come to a close. Visit the Adirondack Public Observatory and view the night sky like a pro! Stargazing at the Adirondack Public Observatory is free and open to the public every Friday (weather dependent).
