5 not-to-miss ADK activities!
Coming to Tupper Lake for the Tinman Triathlon but want to spend a couple extra days in the Adirondacks?
We've got the perfect itinerary for you to follow while you’re here. After all, you spent all that time training, you might as well take a couple of vacation days and reward yourself for all your hard work. Unwind while you explore Tupper Lake.
1. Visit the Wild Center
When visiting Tupper Lake, the Wild Center has got to be on your list of things to do.
Spend a day exploring the exhibits, playing with the otters, navigating the nature trails, and walking above the trees along the Wild Walk. The fairly new exhibit takes you up a walkway above the tree line for a great view of the scenery beyond. Not like your typical museum, the Wild Center gives you a hands-on experience of Adirondack life. Stay for lunch, catch a showing at the theater, or check out the gift shop, the possibilities are endless.
2. Have a lumberjack breakfast
I don’t recommend bulking up with this heavy meal the morning of the triathlon if you are racing — unless you want an upset stomach a couple miles in. However, you definitely need to test out a Lumberjack breakfast while you're in town.
There is no skimping on the size of the pancakes and the amount of food you are going to get at any of our breakfast joints in town. The Lumberjack, The Swiss Kitchen, Main Street, and Amado Bakery & Bistro all are known for serving up delicious breakfast. Of course you can’t just get pancakes, you might as well do the full deal with eggs, toast, home fries, and bacon. I promise you won’t be leaving hungry; as a matter of fact, I almost guarantee you will leave extremely full and very satisfied.
3. Explore our waterways
Our local shops are ready for your visit! Stop in and rent some equipment so you can get out and explore our beautiful lake.
Visit Raquette River Outfitters, where you can find everything you could possibly need for any canoe or kayak trip. Never done it before? That's no problem, take a guided tour or have the pros show you how it’s done! Try a stand up paddle board and test your balance! Rob and Anne can help you decide where you should go based on your experience and what you are looking for.
4. Hit the trails
As if the Triathlon wasn't enough exercise for you... check out our trails!
Looking for something family friendly? Coney Mountain, Mount Arab, and Goodman Mountain make up our Tupper Lake Triad. These mountains provide the best views for the least challenge. Feeling ambitious? You could even do all three of these in a day, and earn your patch on your first try!
If you're looking for something with more of a challenge, Ampersand Mountain is a great hike. Towards the top it gets really interesting with steep rocks that you have to climb. What's even better is that you can hike to Ampersand beach and go for a swim after your trip.
5. Visit our breweries
We are lucky to have two breweries in town that produce pretty great beer. Raquette River Brewery and Big Tupper Brewery both have their own unique tastes and atmospheres.
At Raquette River, you can enjoy some awesome food from Donnie’s Food Truck while you're sipping your brew du jour. The brewery is smaller and usually filled with locals. Check out the new addition of an outdoor pavilion while you're there.
At Big Tupper Brewing, their pub menu has a great take on Adirondack classics — the ideal match for a hot day with a cold brew.
If you're lucky, you may run into some live music at either brewery. And, of course, you can check out their store sections and take a taste of the Adirondacks home with you!
