Off the Beaten Path

Ahhh, fall is in the air. With the chilly mornings and nights, and the smell of wood stoves burning in the air, comes the start of the beautiful changes in the foliage. We see the bright greens turn into vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. And with all of the changes happening, leaf peepers will be in the area. People will be coming to our home to see the beautiful trees and foliage. You may see these leaf peepers parked on the side of the road, at the top of a popular mountain, or at the Municipal Park, but one thing is for sure: Usually everyone has a camera in hand to capture the beauty. 

I love to get out to see the changes in the leaves, but I like to explore a quiet area leaf peepers haven't discovered yet. The Tupper Triad is sure to be busy on the peak days, and benches will be filled with people in the park. The key is to find new spots, that everyone may not know about…yet.

Read on to discover three great new leaf peeping spots this season. They're my favorite spots to take in the beauty! 

1. Panther Mountain

This is the best view for the shortest hike. Only 0.6 mile one way, Panther Mountain is a great hike for the family and hikers of all capabilities. The trail starts to climb right away as tall pines tower over you. After it evens out a bit, you will come to a small ridge that leads to the top. From the partially open summit, you can see the Seward Range to the south and Panther Pond below. This is one of my favorite fall hikes because the reflection of the colorful leaves show up in Panther Pond, making the whole view very picturesque. I strongly encourage you to take this hike and schedule yourself some time to spend at the top to relax, take in the fresh air, and snap a photo or two — the pictures taken from this view are some of the very best.  

2. Piercefield Beach

Piercefield Beach is a great swimming hole that's away from the commotion of town. Follow the gravel road to a hidden gem that makes you feel like you have found your own personal spot to lounge. In the fall, when the water cools down and it isn’t prime swimming weather, it is a great spot to check out the leaves. Bring a blanket and a snack and enjoy the beautiful leaves along the Raquette River. Bring your kayak or canoe and put in here for a paddle along the Raquette to see other beautiful scenery. Lastly, Piercefield beach is a great spot to bring a tennis ball and let your four-legged friend swim and chase it. 

3. Setting Pole Dam

Heading down to Setting Pole Dam, the tall trees form a canopy above, giving you the first glimpse at the changing colors. At the end of the gravel road, you will find a dirt parking area before you reach the dam. This spot can easily be forgotten about as it is not a usual attraction. I find it interesting as it gives a different view of the Raquette River, and it is unique to see the strong currents at the dam. This is a great spot to have a picnic and check out the changing leaves. I guarantee you will see a local with a fishing pole around Setting Pole Dam, as it is known as a popular fishing hole. This is also an access spot for kayaks or canoes if you decide to head out for a paddle.

Fall Photography Tour

On October 6, you can attend the Fall Landscapes & Waterfall Tour with Carl Heilman at The Wild Center. Spend the day photographing some of the most beautiful landscapes around Tupper Lake during the peak of fall color. 

2nd Annual Triad Challenge

Big Tupper Brewing will host the Triad Challenge on October 13. Walk, run, or crawl the Tupper Lake Triad, which are three trails that include Mt. Arab, Coney Mountain, and Goodman Mountain. This is a race, but everyone is encouraged to join the competition no matter how you travel.

Astrophotography Conference

On October 11-14, everyone, regardless of skill level, will have the opportunity to gather under the dark skies to capture photos at this select location. Check out event details here.

Stay With Us!

Check out one of these three spots to get away from the commotion and get a great look at the leaves. Once you are done, refuel at a great restaurant in town, and check out some lodging to continue your stay.
