Tupper Lake is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and small-town charm. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast looking for hiking, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, or snowmobiling, or simply seeking a peaceful getaway to recharge, Tupper Lake provides the ideal setting for a weekend escape. Here's a glimpse of what you can expect when you visit this picturesque town this winter.

Day 1:

Arrival / check-in

Start your visit with a leisurely walk down Park Street. For a taste of local flavor, stop into the Washboard Donut Shoppe & Laundromat (yes, a laundromat) for the best homemade donuts you’ve ever had. My personal favorite is the maple bacon donut, but my 2 year-old loves chocolate frosting with rainbow sprinkles! Whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong. Explore the different local shops on Park Street while savoring your donuts before spending the afternoon at the world-famous The Wild Center.

Two adults and three children peek out from behind a large outdoor sculpture made of twigs, decorated with white Christmas lights and a dusting of snow.

Afternoon / early evening

Visiting The Wild Center in winter offers a magical, serene experience that’s a bit different from its summer vibe, but just as captivating. Outside, the Wild Walk transforms into a winter wonderland, with snow-covered treetops and sweeping views of the surrounding Adirondack peaks. Once the sun sets, Wild Lights begins with Wild Walk and iForest transforming into a magical winter wonderland with thousands of lights and specially-composed music making it a winter season tradition for families.

Day 2:

Late morning

A woman and a teenage girl cross-country ski on a trail through a snowy forest on a sunny day.

After a hearty lumberjack breakfast at a diner in town, it’s time for some outdoor fun. Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned Nordic skier, the James C Frenette Sr Recreational Trails have a trail for you. From beginner to experienced, the groomed trails offer miles of scenic skiing or snowshoeing. There is also a loop that is groomed specifically for fat tire bikes. Enjoy a ski or snowshoe, then hit the sledding hill with the family before you head out. It is guaranteed to make memories that last a lifetime.

Afternoon / evening

Two smiling children aim plastic laser guns in a brightly colored arcade surrounded by elaborate games.

Lakeview Lanes & Foul Line Sports Bar is the perfect place to warm up after a day of winter adventures. A place for the whole family, Lakeview Lanes offers bowling, a large arcade with games for all ages, as well as a beautiful sports bar with a full menu of delicious food. If you are a sports fan, this is the place to be to watch the game as the bar area is surrounded by large TVs. It’s a great place to relax at the end of the day while still being able to let the kids play and have fun.

Day 3:

Morning

Pack your snowshoes and hop in the car for a short drive to the Paul Smith's College VIC. Located just a short 25 mile drive from Tupper Lake, the VIC offers a network of well-maintained trails that wind through the center's stunning 3,000-acre forest. In the winter months, these trails transform into a snow-covered paradise, ideal for snowshoeing at any skill level. As you trek through the quiet woods, you'll be surrounded by pristine landscapes — towering pine trees draped in snow, frozen ponds, and distant mountain views.

A little boy wearing snowshoes crouches in the snow, reaching out to a tiny pine tree growing up through the snow.

Afternoon / evening

Hop back in the car and continue on to Lake Placid to spend the rest of the day exploring its charming downtown. From shopping unique local boutiques, grabbing a coffee, or having a bite to eat at one of the many eateries, there is a lot to see and do on Main Street Lake Placid. The iconic Lake Placid Olympic Center is also located near Main Street, where you can explore the history of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Tupper Lake is well positioned, only thirty miles from Lake Placid, making it a great day trip and opportunity to explore another community.

Whether you're visiting for a weekend getaway or a longer stay, Tupper Lake offers an unbeatable combination of outdoor recreation, natural beauty, and small-town warmth. With its winter beauty, scenic mountains, and endless opportunities for adventure, it's the perfect destination to recharge and reconnect with nature.
