Indoor winter to-dos in Tupper Lake!

Looking for ways to stay entertained in Tupper Lake this winter? From cozy indoor experiences to lively community events, these activities are just as enjoyable as braving the great outdoors. Embrace the charm of this Adirondack town with these must-try activities.

1. Go bowling at Lakeview Lanes

Lakeview Lanes is the perfect spot for family fun, whether you’re an experienced bowler or just looking for a good laugh with friends. The lively atmosphere features modern bowling lanes, an exciting arcade packed with classic and new games, and a menu full of delicious options like pizza and wings, along with a host of other sides. For an extra layer of excitement, check out their special event nights or league games. It’s a warm and welcoming space that’s great for making memories on a winter afternoon or evening. Bonus: On the drive here, you’ll pass by some amazing viewing areas between Simon Pond and Tupper Lake.

2. Explore The Wild Center and Wild Lights

The Wild Center is more than a museum—it’s an interactive hub for nature, science, and art enthusiasts. In the winter, all exhibits are still open to the public, with engaging exhibits about local wildlife and ecosystems, as well as the indigenous cultures in the Adirondacks. And while this may be about indoor activities, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Wild Lights. Wild Lights transforms the grounds into a sparkling wonderland, with glowing trails, illuminated sculptures, and even a chance to stargaze under the Adirondack night sky. This installation has become one of the most beloved (and popular!) attractions in the Adirondacks during the winter, and it is an essential line item for a lovely winter itinerary. Don’t forget to use their new Instagram filter on your stories!

3. Check out a brewery or pub

Warm up with a pint of craft beer at Raquette River Brewing, where you’ll find an impressive selection of seasonal and year-round brews. We’re partial to the Maple Cream Porter in the winter, and you’ll probably be too! Their cozy taproom is perfect for relaxing with friends, and the outdoor fire pits keep things festive even in the snow. Visit on Sundays for 2-for-1 Bloody Marys and mimosas! Over at P-2’s Irish Pub, enjoy Raquette River beers on tap along with comfort food favorites and even healthy options from their Lean & Green section. P-2 also serves as one of the area’s best options for NA drinks! Trivia nights and live music at BOTH of these hangs create a community atmosphere, making these spots a must-visit for both locals and visitors.

4. Indulge in a culinary experience

The Woodshed on Park elevates dining in Tupper Lake with its inventive menu and rustic-chic ambiance. From specialty salads to skillet chicken & biscuits, every dish is crafted with care and flavor, all in a warmly lit setting fit for a winter day. A meal here can be perfectly paired with one of their signature cocktails. We recommended trying the To Melt Your Frozen Heart, a cozy cocktail created with butter-infused bourbon, masala chai tea, and apple cider reduction. It may just be one of the best winter cocktails in the Adirondacks. Looking for more? Amado offers globally-inspired cuisine with Adirondack flair, making it a great spot for a date night, a special occasion, or a story-sharing session. These dining experiences are perfect for savoring the best of local flavors during this beautiful winter season.

5. Catch a movie at the Adirondack State Theater

Step back in time at the Adirondack State Theater, a historic gem now operated by Tupper Arts. This charming venue, which opened its doors in 1914, screens the more popular current showings and offers an experience that’s far more personal than a typical cinema. With its vintage decor and cozy seating, it’s a delightful way to spend an evening. If you aren’t a local, this is a surefire way to feel like one, as the experience connects you with what seeing a film in small towns across the country used to be like. Check their schedule for special showings and community events that make every visit unique.

6. Shop around town

Tupper Lake’s locally-owned shops are full of treasures waiting to be discovered. Spruce & Hemlock offers beautifully curated home decor and gifts (in addition to baked goods!), while Earth Girl Designs specializes in handcrafted jewelry and accessories. At the Adirondack Store, you’ll find handcrafted Adirondack-themed furniture, home decor, souvenirs, and even taxidermy. For something truly unique, stop by Cabin Fever Floral to pick up a stunning floral arrangement or a thoughtful gift. Shopping in Tupper Lake is a leisurely way to explore the town’s creative spirit and support local businesses. With many of the shops being within close proximity, each spot provides a warm refuge from the snow that’ll surely be falling in this mountain town.

7. Immerse yourself in the arts and local music

Tupper Arts brings the community together with a variety of programming throughout the winter, from gallery exhibits showcasing regional talent to live performances that brighten even the coldest nights. The Festival of Lights art show is one of these showcases that brings together artwork from many talented artists, with a focus on pieces that capture the essence of the winter season. Making yet another appearance here is P-2’s Irish Pub, where you can enjoy music, karaoke, and open-mic nights in a lively and welcoming setting. Whether you’re appreciating fine art or belting out your favorite tunes at the local bar, these activities are a fantastic way to connect with Tupper Lake’s quaint cultural scene.

8. Grab a cup of coffee

While we may be mentioning this last on this list, it’s the first thing you should do while you’re in Tupper Lake this winter! Perk and Pine is more than just a coffee shop—it’s a community hub where locals and visitors gather to relax and recharge. Located on Park Street, this cozy cafe offers expertly brewed coffee, a warm ambiance, and plenty of seating for catching up with friends or diving into a good book. What started as a mobile coffee trailer (which will be coming back after the 2024-25 winter season!) has now evolved into an offering that the community has embraced with open arms. Spend some time here to soak in the welcoming vibes of Tupper Lake.

Tupper Lake shines in the winter with its mix of engaging activities and welcoming community spots. Whether you’re indulging in great food, exploring the arts, or just enjoying a cup of coffee, these experiences are proof that winter fun doesn’t always have to happen outdoors.
