This is a classic paddle through a winding portion of the Raquette River, which leads to a sandy beach and spectacular falls. 

Getting there

From the intersection of Route 30 and Route 3 in Tupper Lake, follow Route 3 toward Saranac Lake. Continue past the other junction with Route 30 and continue on Route 3. Locate Coreys Road, turn right and continue down until it turns to a dirt road. On your right you will see a sign for Axton Landing. Take the narrow road right to the parking area. You will see the boat launch.

Paddling

You'll want to schedule a half day for this trip. Starting out you will paddle upstream towards the falls. The good part is you are getting the tough part out of the way. Once you get to the falls there is a sandy beach for swimming, a trail to walk along the falls, and great fishing. Take a break and then return back downstream to Axton Landing.

There is a trail that paddlers use to pass by the un-paddleable falls. This trail was improved by the Northern Forest Canoe Trail in the summer of 2019.

Fishing

Depending on local conditions, look for the species of northern pike, brown trout, walleye, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, and largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Swimming

Near the falls there is a sandy beach for swimming.

Camping

Look for the areas designated for backcountry camping along the Raquette River. At-large wilderness camping is permitted in the area. Campers can set up anywhere that is more than 150 feet from water, roads, or trails unless otherwise noted.
